1,240 users is not 1,240 people.

You hit a thousand users and told your mum. Fair. But Google was counting browsers the whole time, and you are fewer people than you think.

What GA4 means by a user

Google Analytics drops a cookie called _ga into each browser and gives it a random ID. A user, in GA4, is one of those IDs. Google's own developer docs say the cookie is how it tells users apart. So a user is a browser that kept its cookie.

That sounds like a technicality. It is the whole story.

How one person turns into three

  • Sarah reads your pricing page on her phone at lunch. User one.
  • She opens it again on her laptop that evening. Different browser, different cookie. User two.
  • Her laptop clears cookies every week, or she opens a private window. User three.

Three users, one Sarah, zero purchases so far. Multiply that by everyone who browses on two devices and your 1,240 shrinks. By how much? Nobody knows, including Google. It can join devices when people sign in with Google signals or your own user ID, but on a small site that mostly is not happening.

It also runs the other way. People who block Google's script or say no to the cookie banner may not show up as users at all. So the number is too high in one place and too low in another, and you cannot see either error from inside the report.

So what do I do with the number

Read users as browsers. Compare it with itself, week to week, because the error stays roughly the same size. Do not compare it with your email list or your order count and panic.

For anything that matters, count something a person had to do on purpose. Signups. Orders. Replies. Those are real people, every one.

TRY THIS TODAYRename it in your head today. Every time you see "users" in GA4, read "browsers". Then pick one count that only a real person can produce, like signups, and put that at the top of your weekly check.

Moxel does not try to count people at all. It sets no cookies, so it counts visits and what happened in them, and it says so in a sentence next to the number. More on that in your stats in plain English.

What the reel said

MOXGoogle says twelve hundred forty users. How many people is that?

TALLYFewer than that.

MOXIt literally says users.

TALLYGoogle counts browsers, not people. Phone at lunch, laptop at night. One person, two users.

TALLYClear the cookies, and it's three.

MOXSo how many people is it really?

TALLYNobody can tell you exactly. Read users as browsers.

MOXSend this to the founder who just hit a thousand.

Asked a lot

Are users in Google Analytics real people?
No. GA4 counts a user per browser cookie. One person on a phone and a laptop is two users, and clearing cookies makes a third.
Why is my GA4 user count higher than my customers?
Because users are browsers, and most visitors never buy. Compare users with themselves over time, and count signups or orders when you need real people.
