Direct is the junk drawer
The name suggests people who typed your URL into the address bar. Some did. But Google's own help page lists much more that ends up in direct: links with no tracking tags, links in offline documents like PDFs, and redirects or link shorteners that strip the information on the way.
So direct does not mean "loyal fans who know my address". It means "we don't know". A junk drawer with a fancy label.
The usual suspects
- WhatsApp. Links opened from WhatsApp often pass no referrer, so the visit counts as direct. If you share your shop in group chats, a lot of your direct is this.
- PDFs. A link in your menu, price list or invoice arrives with no referrer.
- Email apps that open links in their own browser.
- Bookmarks, and people who really did type it. Those exist too.
In the reel, the 112 direct visits split into 41 from WhatsApp, 23 from a PDF menu and 48 typed or unknown. Those are example numbers for a made-up café, but the shape is very common for small businesses that grow by word of mouth.
Put a name tag on your links
A name tag is a UTM parameter, a bit of text on the end of a link that says where it came from. Analytics tools read it and file the visit under that name.
So instead of sharing yoursite.com, share yoursite.com/?utm_source=whatsapp. In your PDF menu, use ?utm_source=menu. That is the whole trick.
TRY THIS TODAYToday, change the link in your WhatsApp profile, your Instagram bio and any PDF you send out. Add ?utm_source= and a short name for each place. Next week, direct shrinks and those names show up.
Moxel reads utm_source, utm_medium and utm_campaign and shows each one by name. More plain-English readings of common stats are in your stats in plain English.
What the reel said
TALLYDirect traffic. A hundred and twelve visits.
MOXSo a hundred and twelve people typed in my web address?
TALLYProbably not. Direct means Google couldn't tell where they came from.
MOXOh. Like the link I sent on WhatsApp. Or the one in my PDF menu.
MOXSo put a name tag on the end of every link you share.
MOXThen they show up by name. Moxel is at getmoxel dot com.
Asked a lot
- What does direct traffic mean in Google Analytics?
- Visits where GA4 could not tell the source. It includes typed URLs, but also untagged links from apps like WhatsApp, links in PDFs, and some redirects.
- How do I reduce direct traffic in GA4?
- Add UTM tags to every link you share, for example ?utm_source=whatsapp. Those visits then show up under that name instead of direct.
